The following information was provided by Ian Maclean, regarding his grandfather, Kenneth Maclean, who worked at the Spa Hotel, Strathpeffer, around 1895.
"I, Ian Kenneth Maclean, was born in 1944 in London to James Maclean and Olwen Maclean (née Watts).
Grandad Kenneth Maclean was born in Urray, Ross-Shire in 1880, to Alex and Hetty Maclean.
It is believed that Kenneth worked at the Spa Hotel at one time aged about 14 or 15 as a bell-boy or junior steward. Grandad Kenneth had 6 other siblings: Catherine b.1883, Farquhar b.1884, Mary b.1887, Isabella b.1890, Alexander b.1894 & Harriet b.1896.
Grandad married Georgina Cummings on the 24th April 1908. He is described as a Piper and she a Domestic Servant. Georgina died in 1946 (as per People's Journal announcement.)
Grandad emigrated to Australia on 10th December 1952 with his second wife Violet Maclean (née Kemp)
He died in Australia in 1955 and was survived by Violet. His death certificate states that he had no surviving offspring. Due to an unknown (by me at least) family rift, it is believed that this was the reason for the emigration. My father James and his only son (me) were very much alive at that time.
The original article in the People’s Journal relates to the death of my paternal grandmother Georgina Maclean (née Cummings)
It has information about the "Caledonia" which at the time was a rest and recuperation centre in London for members of the armed forces and my grandfather was apparently the Manager and Georgina worked there in an honorary capacity, at the same time working for the V.A.D. Club.
This photo shows granddad Kenneth Maclean in Churchillian pose and was taken before he emigrated".
